New Battlefield 3 game play revealed

I must admit, I am drooling a bit after watching the newest video for gameplay. And to think this is only pre-Alpha video and nowhere near Beta. What's more interesting is the hand-to-hand combat scene. Yes, you read it right, hand-to-hand combat! Last week it was rumored that this would be incorporated and now we have game play footage.

Battlefield 3 is definitely creating a new pedestal for itself to be placed higher than Call of Duty. Can it overthrow the giant later on this year. I'll keep my eyes open and bring you more of this beautiful war between these FPS heavy hitters.

Nvidia ups the ante @ PAX East

Nvidia made it out to PAX East this year in style. They brought their best video cards in and showcased the best looking 3D in gaming I have seen to date.

103 inches of 3D pleasure running on a Panasonic display being powered by an Nvidia Quadro Pro card. It would have been nice to see this on the newly announced GTX590 card but we can't always get what we want. Either way the software and the hardware are very similar. The difference is that the GTX590 is going to have a faster edge on rendering but the Quadro is better built for work horses.

The demo was running Crysis 2 in 3D over HDMI using steroescopic 3D and Nvidia's 3D Vision technology. I must say this is the best 3D in gaming I have seen to date. The glasses were not bulky or extra geeky like other vendors that are trying to utilize the 3D factor for gaming.

They are lightweight and feel like an ordinary pair of sunglasses. The LCD lenses are not overbearing when playing and do not tint the image or make it too dark. The wireless kit will cost you about $199.99.

The slated release for the GTX590 is concurrent with Crysis 2 for a March 22 release. There isn't a final price point for the GTX590 but I won't be surprised if it isn't lower than $600. The rendering capabilities of this card is incredible. Crysis 2 was running full on with the demo and the card was not chopping graphics at all. There are very few cards who can say they can even do the same for the first Crysis let alone get near the newest installment. PC users will definitely be the envy for this game.

Nvidia also had on hand tablets running their new Tegra 2 chips for demo. Outstanding game play on a lightweight tablet is not something I would have dreamed of saying until playing with these for a while. The Motorola Xoom has one of the best displays on a tablet I've seen to date. The Tegra 2 has the ability to let the machine run great graphics in-game and 3D capabilities as well.

What does this all mean? Well not only do I anticipate great 3D arcade style gaming making it's way to tablet machines in the near future but I also sense that the casual gamers may see a future Angry Birds 3D or Bejeweled Blitz 3D down the road.

The 3D on the tablet responded well to games. The on screen controls do not have the 3D setting applied to them so they stay flat and in place. The display kept up great to the change in pace with the arcade style shooter that was being demo'd. The Xoom runs on an Android OS so the market place is full of games playable on the device. What makes this tablet better for a core gamer than the iPad is that the Android market is bringing Sony PSOne games to add to their fare. Perhaps playable in 3D. All in all this could be great for any core gamer or casual gamer. Watch out iPad.

PAX East Review

Busy weekend with PAX East 2011 in town this weekend. So many exhibits and so many sneak peeks to new games. Also a lot of vendors were showcasing new products and new technology slated for release this year. So much to talk about, where to begin...

The show was extremely filled with people from all over the country. The waiting line to enter the exhibit hall was full each day. Even though I was there way earlier than the doors were opened there must've been a couple hundred people in front of me.

With all the vendors and developers there I was able to preview some of the most anticipated games of the year. The biggest surprise was not from the big players but from the indie publishers there showcasing games for PC/Mac machines, mobile devices, and XBLA and PSN.

The main attraction for me this year was L.A. Noire.

Rockstar built a nice private viewing booth for their showcase. A nice demo of a case in the game was shown to attendees along with some news about the game. One being that the game may take between 25 - 30 hours to complete.

The biggest contender of any new game I played has to be Mortal Kombat.

The game play was solid for the demo. The controls were very responsive. The combos played very much like the older games. The game play almost left you feeling the damage inflicted on the characters. This is definitely the reboot that Mortal Kombat so deserved. If there is a fighting game to get this year it would be this one.

The biggest disappointment came from a game with so much potential.Homefront.

The controls seemed a little stiff and the graphics some what choppy. I will give the game one merit - the intro sequence left me so pissed off at the AI that it made me want to kill them all. The story is going to carry this game.

I will have more specific reviews and dig deeper into some of the releases coming this week so keep your eyes open. In the mean time here are some pictures of this years PAX East.

Zombies galore

Remember Dawn of the Dead? The opening scene when the little girl jumped on the guys back and started chomping away at his neck? That's what this trailer reminded me of. What game? Dead Island!

This trailer is pretty intense so watch with care

Reading about this game it sounds like a Left 4 Dead meets Dead Rising 2 minus the Boomers. I actually am excited about this title.I love the Dead Rising series and zombies in general. There haven't been as much hands on coverage of the game so far but from what has been out there it looks great.

Dead Island is the story of paradise gone mad. It's set on the resort island of Banoi, a place where people go to take a break from the normal.

The game has you playing as one of four characters, each of which came to the island for different reasons. Interestingly enough the demo previewed has you playing as a one-hit wonder rapper by the name of Sam B.

The zombies in paradise come in 2 varieties. One more reminiscent of the George Romero zombies that move extremely slow and just want "BRAAAAAINNNSSSSS". The other more like the ones you've seen in Dawn of the Dead or Zombieland. They come at you fast and give you a split second to act.

The damage that can be done also play a great deal in the game's mechanics. Bones can be severed and joints can be dislocated or even popped off. Flesh will be able to be ripped off and muscles and bone will be shown underneath. The attention to these details are minor but bring realism to bodily damage. This will give you the option to slow down your enemies or render them lame by chopping off limbs or heads.

Expect this game to play out like a culmination of great zombie movies all in an open world game. Keep your eyes open for a late summer release.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

The newest trailer for the newest Zelda title.

Rumor has it the Gaming Developers Conference has dropped hints for something that Nintendo intends to release to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Zelda. Well it's about time!
